WEEI 93.7 FM is technically licensed to Lawrence, Massachusetts, but ask anyone in Boston where they go for sports talk and they'll say "WEEI" without hesitating. This USA radio station has been Boston's sports backbone for decades - Red Sox baseball, Celtics basketball, Patriots Mondays and Fridays, all of it landing here. The call letters trace back to Edison Electric Illuminating, borrowed from the AM sister station that's been around even longer.
The FM side started life in April 1960 under completely different identities - WGHJ, then WCCM-FM, WCGY, WEGQ, WQSX, WMKK - basically a different name every few years until 2011 when it finally settled into sports radio and stayed there. Six call sign changes before finding its lane. Boston sports fans were patient.
What actually runs on 93.7 day-to-day is a mix of local hosts who've covered Boston sports long enough to have real credibility, plus ESPN Radio filling overnight and weekend gaps. The Red Sox coverage is flagship-level - full game broadcasts, pregame shows, postgame analysis. Same goes for the Celtics and Boston College athletics.
