WBZFM The Sports Hub 98.5 launched on August 13, 2009 - and the first thing they aired was replays of the New England Patriots' 2001, 2003, and 2004 Super Bowl winning radio broadcasts. That's a pretty deliberate opening statement for a brand new station. Boston sports fans knew exactly what they were getting. Two Marconi Awards followed - Sports Station of the Year in 2011, then again in 2014. Not bad for a station that didn't exist before August of that year.
The 98.5 frequency goes back to October 1948 - started as WNAC-FM, then WRKO-FM, then WROR, then WBMX. CBS Radio grabbed it in 2009, cleared everything out, and rebuilt it as The Sports Hub from scratch. Studios ended up in Waltham, transmitter in Newton. Nine thousand watts sounds modest until you factor in the antenna sitting 349 meters above average terrain - that height does a lot of work for coverage across Greater Boston and into New England.
The flagship arrangements are significant. Patriots, Bruins, Celtics, New England Revolution - all four live on 98.5. That's every major Boston sports franchise except the Red Sox, which is a genuine competitive advantage over crosstown rival WEEI. When playoff runs overlap across multiple sports, listeners don't need to hunt across the dial.
Weekday programming built around personalities who've become genuinely part of Boston sports culture. Toucher & Rich handle mornings, Felger & Mazz own afternoons - a pairing that generates enough controversy to keep people engaged even during slow sports weeks.
